This unit began with an overview of several different approaches and methodologies and the rationale behind each before giving an extensive lesson of the Engage, Study and Activate (ESA) approach. ESA is a flexible approach in which the teacher begins by priming the students with an activity that arouses their interest and gets them to begin drawing on prior knowledge to use English, then follows be having the students study and practice target language forms, and finishes by having the students create meaningful outputs with the target language. This order can be adjusted and added depending on the students. The lesson then gave examples of activities for each stage and finished by discussing feedback. After reading, I feel that this ESA approach combines the best of Task-Based, PPP, CLT, and lexical education methodologies with a sensitivity to affective considerations consistent with Suggestopedia.
