Conditionals are sentences used to estimate or predict what could happen, what might have happened and what we wish would happen. most sentences using the conditional contain the word if or similar expressions. the sentence has two clauses; the if clause and the main clause. the five main types of conditionals highlight the form and usage of each type. The unit further suggests some teaching ideas that can be used to effectively deliver this topic to the students. Reported and direct speech on the other hand are used to gerally report what somebody is saying now or said before by either quoting or repeating the exact words (direct speech) or summarising the spoken words (indirect speech). For direct speech, the quoted words are put in quotation marks while in indirect speech there are no quotation marks. There are some rules to be followed when changing the direct to reported speech like verb tenses and the pronouns and also time expressions especially when backshifting.
