Reading and listening are receptive skills which we usually do for a certain purpose or just for entertainment. Detailed reading, scanning, skimming, prediction and deduction fall under the subskills of receptive skills. In teaching receptive skills, potential problems do arise. For the reading lesson, students may have the tendency to read every word as a separate piece; sentence length and grammar structure can also become a challenge for students especially if they are not quite familiar with them. As for the listening lesson, how a teacher speaks: speed and accent can greatly affect the student's learning. Teachers are then strongly adviced to be careful in selecting texts and topics to teach and find out if the chosen materials can generate his/students' interests.
