Targeting the needs of individuals and bringing this together to develop lessons is an important role of the teacher. Completing a needs analysis allows ownership and creates and element of buy-in to the lesson/course. Relationships and having a connection with the teacher builds for better learning. As mentioned, similar realities are there for younger learners, as well as the business learner. Business learners have a need to have fun, to have a teacher who is interested in them and who can meet their needs too, beyond a course book. The interesting trap that many ESOL teachers fall into, when the whole class speaks one language, not English, is using local vocabulary or worse still, using a student in the class to translate instructions and lessons into their first language!
