This unit presents a detailed outline of phonology which is the study, science, analysis and classification of the physical properties of sounds. Intonation and stress are described along with techniques for indicating and teaching these areas. The unit concentrates on the International Phonetic Alphabet and its role in helping students learn to correctly pronounce English. Place and manner of articulation are described along with techniques for teaching the pronunciation of individual sounds. I will use the information and ideas presented in the unit to help develop lesson plans for intermediate to advanced students who are interested in refining their English pronunciation skills.
