Unit sixteen covers conditionals and direct and reported speech. There are five forms of the conditional, all of which start with if. Zero conditional is used for irrefutable facts, marked by the use of the present tense. First conditional has to do with probable situations, using the present simple plus will/may or another modal verb. Second conditional expresses unlikely future situations. It uses the past simple, would/could, and the base form of the verb. Third conditional addresses purely hypothetical situations. It uses if plus past perfect plus would/could plus have plus a past participle. Mixed conditional is a mix of second and third conditional. It states, "if I had...I would have...". The second section concerns direct and reported speech. Direct speech is that actual statement that was made by the person in the present situation. Reported speech is any other restatement of what the said person has said. There are many changes that take place in term of verb tenses. For example, present simple changes to past simple. Likewise, present perfect turns into past perfect. I found this section quite challenging because it is something that is so innate as a native English speaker that it was difficult to differentiate between all of the forms. However, after reading it several times, I have learned quite a bit, as stated above.
