When teachers teach new language, they can use the ESA methods previously learned to effectively teach this new language. New language includes grammar, vocabulary, and functions. When we teach grammatical structures, students need to understand their meaning, use, forms, and spoken/written variants. In addition to these aspects of meaning and grammatical usage, teachers must also teach spelling and pronunciation for new vocabulary. Language functions include agreeing, disagreeing, invitations, and suggestions.
For each of these three types of new language, different ESA forms are more useful (whether it is straight arrow, boomerang, or patchwork style). Each ESA phase also has specific activities that can be used to teach this new language.
