Past verb tenses for this unit include past simple, past perfect, past continuous, and past perfect continuous. Past simple differs from past perfect in structure because past simple uses the basic form of the verb, but the past perfect uses 'had' and the past participle. For example 'I walked to the park' uses past simple tense, but 'I had walked to the park' uses the past perfect tense. Past simple is used to talk about completed actions at a specific time, though the time may not be mentioned. Past perfect talks about general experience and a past action at an indefinite period in time. Past continuous differs from past perfect continuous in structure because past continuous uses was/were and the verb+ing, but past perfect continuous uses had, been, and the verb+ing. Past continuous is often used in narrative descriptions, interrupted actions, and actions that probably continued. For example, 'he was reading when I called him' tells us his reading was interrupted by a phone call. Past perfect continuous can be used to tell of a continuous action until a specific moment. For example, 'When I called, he had been reading for two hours' tells us how long he had been reading before I called. Some activities to use in the activate stage when studying past simple are matching games, discussing past holidays, or an role playing an interview. If studying past continuous, playing a detective game or making journal entries are interesting opportunities to practice. The past perfect tense can be practiced if the teacher gives the student a final result, and the student gives reasons for this result. Teachers can give a specific situation and let the students describe what had been happening until that time to practice using the past perfect continuous tense.
