There are several teaching methods to be considered and used based on culture and student level. Regardless of which method you choose, each lesson should consist of an engage, a study, and an activate stage. A few examples of the engage stage are: hangman, anagrams, relaying answers from other students, and word linking. The purpose of the engage stage is to get the students involved and speaking right away. The teacher should not correct students in the engage stage. The study stage may involve drilling, tongue twisters, or worksheets. This stage focuses on pronunciation, understanding, and accuracy. The teacher should employ appropriate correction methods if the mistake prevents understanding, is related to the current language point, or is a class wide problem. In the activate stage, the students may conduct a role play, discussion, or survey. The goal of the activate stage is for the students to use currently and previously learned language points. The teacher should only correct if necessary. Overall, teachers should remember balance, encouragement, and student involvement are key throughout each lesson.
