In Unit 7, I learned about he importance of vocabulary, grammar and functions in teaching English to non-native speakers. It was interesting to read about the typical 'straight arrow' structured ESA vocabulary lesson used with beginning students. This type of lesson is used to target grammar or vocabulary. I learned that an ESA patchwork grammar lesson is used for mid level students. Language function lessons that activates language the most effectively is used with the boomerang and patchwork type ESL lessons. I think teachers need to be familiar with all methods, assess student's level and be versatile and flexible about the type of lessons he/she plans for their students.
