Different learners require different adaptations in your teaching methodology,,Beginners may vary considerably in background and needs. Absolute beginners have had no exposure to English while false beginners may have studied in the past and retained very little. Adult beginners differ from young learners in that they are usually highly motivated. Finally, the learners native language may not be based on the Roman alphabet thus necessitating much initial work on basic literacy skills. Much ESL teaching is 1 to 1. The student is usually highly motivated but the lack of classroom dynamics can lead to boredom. I am a K-8 classroom teacher so I feel I am well acquainted with the pros and cons of the young learner. Before I was a teacher I worked for 10 years in the corporate world and see the importance of a needs analysis and group needs negotiation after the levels of the learners have been identified. Finally, across all these groups another level of differentiation may exist in the class room depending on whether the class is monolingual or multilingual.
