English has only three tenses, but there are many aspects to each tense that make learning the differences difficult for non-native speakers. This is especially true for learners whose native languages have fewer tenses or different usages.
The main part of each tense is its form and usage. Form includes how to construct affirmative, negative ,and question sentences. Usage is when to use each tense. Present simple is used for habitual actions and facts. Present continuous is used for actions happening at the time of speaking. Present perfect is used for experiences or otherwise past actions that relate to the present. Present perfect continuous is a combination of the last two that emphasizes the uninterrupted activity.
As teachers we must pay attention to common errors in both form and usage.
