In this first unit, we discussed what makes a good teacher, as well as what makes a good learner. In addressing the different facets that a teacher may play we found that he can be a Manager or Controller, an Organizer, an Assessor, a Prompter, a Participant, a Tutor, a Resource or Facilitator, a Model, an Observer or Monitor. What role the teacher adopts will depend on various factors, among which is the type of activity that is being carried out. Within this considerations enters considerations of age and learning level of the students. Concerning students, we saw that the factors that affect the learning experience are previous Learning Experience, Motivation, Nervousness, Language Awareness, Behaviour Problems, Life Experience, Culture and First Language as well as the Language Level. Following up on the language level, we can define students into the categories of Beginner, Elementary, Low/pre-Intermediate, Intermediate, Upper Intermediate and Advanced learners; all of these have correspondences in the classification given by the Common European Framework (as A1-2, B1-2 and C1-2). Above all, a teacher should care about the students in the first place, and attend to their particular needs in so far as it is possible, rather than get distracted with the idea of the job itself.
