Reading and listening skills are equally important. Listening skills can be more problematic for students as the language is not captured in a way that they can go back to it easily. There are a few sub skills which need to be kept in mind regardless of whether you are reading/listening for a specific purpose or for entertainment. The areas to keep in mind are predictive skills, scanning skills to find specific information, skimming to get the general idea, reading for detailed information and deduction from context. Many problems can be avoided through pre-teaching vocabulary, careful text selection, choosing topics that align with student interests, choosing activities to generate interest and choosing tasks to promote understanding and not just as a check for understanding.
