Teaching pronunciation can be difficult for native speakers who understand it instinctively without knowing its rules. There are many aspects to phonology, including intonation and stress. Intonation is the variation in pitch in a whole sentence. A sentence normally rises and then falls at the end to indicate the speaker has finished. A sentence will fall and then rise at the end if the speaker expects a response. Stress is used to emphasize the point of the sentence. We will stress a word in this case. Stress also exists within multi-syllable words in English. Another point of spoken English is sound joining: linking, dropping, and sound changing. Finally, because English spelling is not phonetic, it is useful to use the IPA to recognize the sounds of English. We also need to understand the various organs that make speech to properly explain to students.
