In this unit, I learned ways to introduce vocabulary words and grammatical structures. When choosing appropriate vocabulary words, one must consider the following: appropriateness of words to students and to the task at hand, frequency and coverage, meaning how often students are likely to use such words, and teachability. The students success in learning new vocabulary depends on a few factors: similarity to own language, similarity to English words they already know, spelling and pronunciation and appropriateness. Finally when teaching a class a grammar and vocabulary unit, it is best to use a simple "straight arrow" ESA lesson plan, as not to complicate an easy lesson.
Next we learned about grammatical structures, which is best taught with a "boomerang" or "patchwork" ESA lesson plan, to keep the students engaged and not bored. When teaching grammatical structures, we must keep the following in mind to fulfill the teaching plan: students must learn the meaning of the language, how to use it, forms and patterns and spoken versus written forms.
