Unit 5 was an excellent overview of managing behavior that discussed the importance of establishing rapport, how you should talk to your students using good eye contact, gestures and the tone of your voice. It discussed the various ways to group students including whole class grouping, students working on their own, and pair work. The unit also described in detail the different ways to arrange your classroom depending on the space available, age, nationality and personality of students, and types of chairs/tables. I especially liked the part on teaching talking time and student talking time that explained the advantages and disadvantages of both. In establishing discipline, giving instructions is very important. The unit described how to give effective instructions using simple language, being consistent, using verbal cues and checking the insructions.
