This unit brought me back to the times when I was learning Japanese in the Philippines and when I was tutoring English in Japan.
Back when I was studying Japanese, my mentors used random Q&A approach in the class. This was challenging, especially for someone like me who never had a background in the Japanese language. My mentors were patient and encouraging. They utilized audio CDs and visual aids to keep their lessons as interesting as possible. They rarely gave feedback but they made sure their students do not go astray while learning the language.
When I went to Japan to study, tutoring English became one of my part-time jobs. I was not sure how to get my tutees learn English so what I did was imitate what my mentors did. I am not sure if my approach had been effective for them. This unit gave me an insight on the varieties of teaching approach and techniques to help or encourage students to learn a language.
