In this unit I learned about the coursebooks and lesson materials while teaching English. Books and materials can be divided into 2 groups: authentic and created. Authentic material is anything a native speaker would hear or read, such as newspapers, songs, poems, menus, films, etc. The usage of authentic materials is effective because these materials are real and therefore more interesting and motivating. Besides, students gain confidence when they understand them. Created materials are usually designed by teachers to replace or supplement materials from a course book. They can, unlike authentic materials, be graded to the level of the students. Common created materials include: crosswords, puzzles, flashcards, gap fill activities and others. When analyzing a course book, we should normally consider such factors as price (can students afford this course book?), methodology (is there a good balance between study and activation?), and all supplement materials. However, course books do not always fit the specific needs and interests of all the class members and they can make teacher lazy and stop them from being creative. That is why teachers should not base all of their lessons around the material in the course book. Thank you for this unit.
