Students' levels and progress should be evaluated at all stages of English learning, and include external exams that teachers may need to prepare students for. The first evaluations that English learners will take are placement exams and diagnostic exams. Placement exams will assist in grouping students in appropriate groups of students at the same level, and diagnostic tests are designed to show what students do and don't know at the beginning of a course. Teachers can use progress tests to monitor progress throughout the course. Practice tests follow the format and structure of an external exam in order to help students prepare for a specific external exam (such as TOEFL or PET). While evaluation can be both informal and formal, language schools will most likely require teachers to engage in some level of formal testing.
