This unit covered specialized strategies for teaching "special groups" such as young learners and business professionals. Much of the advice given was straightforward and quite logical, such as frequently incorporating authentic material from their workplace into business English courses, and catering to the shorter attention spans and higher energy levels of children by frequently changing activities. I would like to comment on the strict target language only approach presented in this unit. During my MA program we have frequently discussed this position and its real and perceived effects, and I believe that it would be more responsible to state that a monolingual policy is not universally recognized as the best strategy. Many scholars involved in the study of second language acquisition have found that multilingualism (use of L1 and target language) in the classroom may have positively effects, especially when clarifying instructions or explaining grammatical rules.
