Chapter eleven is about reading and listening which is considered here as receptive skill. These two skills are very important as they are directly connected to our motivation. for example when we are reading a leaflet about our mobile phone we read it for detail but when we read a novel our motivation is just reading for leisure or when we are talking with doctor about our illness we are listening with all ears to know everything but we are listening for jock without having any intention to keep it in long term memory. The purpose of reading and listening is understanding both by knowing the meaning of word and pre –existing knowledge of world .So readers and listeners use different kind of skills to understand the meaning of text or decode the listening .they are some techniques which help us to read a text .like scanning which is reading in order to find the specific information in the text or skimming which is reading for understanding the gist of text and predictive skills which is predicting content of text from its headline or introduction and reading for detailed information which is reading in detail and concentrated on every single words and finally deduction reading which is deducing the meaning of single word or phrases from context Problems associated with language are unknown words, sentence lengths which makes problem to learner. In comparison reading and listening, students are less face with difficulties in reading as they can read the text as much as possible but it is not the same in listening. They should understand what a person says in less than seconds. In pre – teaching method we should teach difficult vocabulary to students before listening or reading. Most of students are eager to understand every unknown word in text, however, we as a teacher should convince them not to focus on every unknown word and they should either guess the meaning or understand the gist of text. So we conclude that in pre teaching we only teach the key word. That is all. It is better teachers select the reading and listening material according to students ability or use authentic and non authentic material. Authentic material are those which challenge students knowledge but not authentic are prepared according to students knowledge. But authentic material should be selected according the knowledge of student not according to what they don’t know. Topic selection is very important as students always stimulate with topic which they are going to hear or read. If the topic not to grab their interest in that case, learning process cannot be complete . Choosing a variety of topics is important and never ever teacher should thing that if one topic in interested to him is equally interested to other students. Another item is creation of interest in students by explaining subject or asking question or showing photo .And the last one is tasks which should neither easy not difficult according to students level . A common activity is jigsaw reading where students are placed in pairs and each reads part of the text.
