This unit provided information concerning the different types of evaluation and testing available to foreign language teachers, the difference in purpose behind the different testing types, and a listing of the most commonly taken external English proficiency exams. As a German learner I have taken all of these types of exams (placement, progress, practice, diagnostic and external), including external exams for admission to German universities, etc. Based on my prior experience with these types of exams, I think it is very important to take into consideration what types of material they will cover, but also one must not tailor the language course to the test. Too many schools value test scores over actual communicative ability.
