The simple past form of 'to be' has two forms- was and were. There are several irregular verbs in the simple past form without rules, so students will need to get familiar with those. Past simple forms are used for a completed definite time in the past. Past continuous uses (was/were)+(verb+ing)-- often used without a time expression. Past continuous is used for past descriptions. Past perfect is known as the form used to describe a past event in the past or past of the past and is formed by subject+had+past participle. The past perfect continous is formed using subject+had+been+verb+ing and is used to talk about an action in the past that had been going on continously up to the past moment being mentioned.
