I've taught in a few different types of schools. Some used very specific course books and materials and some used none at all. I found great freedom when not using a course book but that also came with a lot of stress and work to make sure the classes were entertaining as well as instructive. Schools that used course books and very detailed lesson plans for teachers could become predictive and boring but allowed me to perfect my skills in that specific class. Both have their advantages and both attract different kinds of teachers.
This unit does a good job in laying out the pros and cons of both styles of teaching along with samples of materials to use in class. Role-play cards, pictures, and worksheets are good ways to get the students engaged no matter what materials the class uses.
