This unit introduced the multifaceted topic of phonology and pronunciation in the English language. It stated that this area of teaching English is often inadequately covered in ESL courses because many teachers are not well trained themselves, and therefore lack the confidence to teach it. Nonetheless, being able to accurately and fluently speak the language is critical to the students' success in effectively communicating with native speakers. The unit provided information in both written and video format covering the topics of sentence intonation, word and syllable stress, the various sounds used in English (phonemic alphabet and how the sounds are formed by the speech organs), and how native speakers often link and join words together in everyday speech. The second video showing presentation of part of the phonemic alphabet in a classroom setting was the most helpful for me. As a non-teacher, seeing the material presented in an actual classroom (as with unit 10) is worth more than whole volumes of written material.
