Modal, phrasal verbs, and the passive vs. the active voice are complex parts of English grammar that can present a challenge to learners. Modal verbs are auxiliary verbs that add meaning to the main verb. They can express differing levels of formality, probability, obligation, capability, advice, and permission. Phrasal verbs, on the other hand, are multi-word verbs that may contain a verb plus one or two particles (a particle being a preposition, an adverb, or an adverb plus a preposition). There are three types of phrasal verbs, the first of which is intransitive verbs which cannot be followed by a direct object. Next up are transitive separable verbs, in which an object pronoun can only come between the verb and the particle but an object noun can come either between the verb and the particle or after the particle. The third and last is transitive inseparable, in which the object pronoun or object noun must only come after the particle. In addition, transitive inseparable verbs include instances in which the particles are an adverb plus a preposition. The passive voice is simply a rearrangement of the active voice in which the object of the active verb becomes the subject of the passive verb. In the active voice the agent is the primary focus while in the passive voice the agent of the action is of little to no importance. The passive voice is primarily used in instances where the speaker either doesn't know who the agent is, doesn't want to reveal who the agent is, or it is not important who the agent is.
