This unit discusses the receptive skills of reading and listening. In order to communicate in a new language the student has to be able to learn to hear/read and comprehend what they are listening to. At first the student may try to translate every word into their L1 language to gain comprehension, but eventually they will have to gain the confidence to understand the meaning without translating everything. The teacher can help the student gain confidence by choosing appropriate material (not too difficult or authentic), preteaching the difficult vocabulary, and focusing on understanding the gist instead of understanding every single word. There is nothing wrong with understanding the gist of what you are reading/listening to. People do this in their L1 language all the time when they scan a headline or skim reading material for they are interested in. It also helps to choose topics that are interesting to the students to increase their attention and motivation.
