This unit covered the effective use of course books and other materials in the teaching of ESL. It discussed the difference between authentic (real world) and created (course book / teacher-developed) materials and the benefits of each. It was stated that both should be used as part of a balanced approach, and examples were provided. Next, the relative advantages and disadvantages of using course books and ways to optimize their use were presented. Depending upon the needs of the students, specific course book materials or entire lessons can be omitted, replaced, supplemented or adapted as deemed appropriate by the teacher. Lastly, criteria for how to assess and choose course books and other materials (if the opportunity presents itself) were reviewed. The most helpful aspect of this unit was being introduced to some of the resources available from which a course syllabus and the specifics for the various language point lessons can be developed.
