In this unit I learned that every word in the English language can basically be classified into one of seven different parts of speech (as a noun, an adjective, a verb, an adverb, a pronoun, a preposition, or a conjunction). I learned that a noun is generally defined as being a person, place, or thing. Nouns can be divided into five main categories (common, proper, compound, abstract, and collective). Nouns can, for the most part, be classified as either being countable or uncountable. Countable nouns can be preceded by what are called articles (a/an, known as indefinite articles and the, a definite article) and can be used in the plural. Noncountable nouns can not have "a" or "an" in front of them, and can not be used in the plural. I learned that an adjective is essentially a word that describes a noun. An adjective gives more information about a noun, describing the person, place, or thing. Adjectives can also be used in a comparative form (e.g. taller, shorter, younger, older) to differentiate between two persons, places, or things. Adjectives can also take a superlative form when comparing more than two persons, places, or things (e.g. tallest, shortest, youngest, oldest). I learned that a verb is a word that describes action or perhaps a state of being. Verbs are either transitive or intransitive. Transitive verbs are followed directly by an object. Intransitive verbs simply state an action, with no direct relation to an object. Verbs also have tenses. The tenses (base form, past simple, past participle, and present participle) show a verb's relationship to time, depending on the ending that is attached to the verb. One other thing I learned about verbs involves what is called a gerund. A gerund is the -ing form of a verb used as a subject or an object. I learned that adverbs are words that can modify a verb, an adjective, or another adverb. Adverbs tell us how an action was done (e.g. slowly, quickly, recently, soon, etc.). I learned that a pronoun is a word that is used to replace a noun. There are four types (personal, possessive, reflexive, and relative). Possessive pronouns, like the word "mine" can be easily confused with possessive adjectives such as "my". Like other pronouns, possessive pronouns replace nouns, while possessive adjectives describe them. I learned that a preposition shows the relationship between a noun or pronoun and another word in a sentence. This relationship is spatial, temporal, or directional. For example, in the sentence "Brad ran towards the ocean", the word "towards" is a preposition since it shows direction. And lastly, I learned that conjunctions are used to link words or parts (clauses) of a sentence together. In summary, I can see that understanding parts of speech is key to knowing how to put words together correctly in order to make sentences that are readable as well as gramatically correct.
