This unit is important in teaching us the categorization of words. Some of the main categories are nouns, adjectives, articles, verbs, adverbs, gerunds, pronouns and prepositions. Under these categories, the unit further elaborates and explains the sub-categories of the different word groups, or as the unit calls it Parts of Speech. The types of word groups are critical in the user's understanding of the English language. At first as I was studying the unit, the understanding of Parts of Speech seems like it is essential for writing. Grammar does make up a significant proportion of our writing exercises. However, upon further probing, it encompasses our everyday speech as well. Knowing the Parts of Speech allows us to articulate sentences that can be understood by those who we are speaking to. I feel that this is how grammatically-correct English is spoken, when we understand and fully comprehend how sentences are formed. Unit 2 has given me an understanding of how some people speak well, not the accent, but the proper usage and articulation of grammar. As a person who grew up in a bilingual country, I notice that our speech is mostly a direct translation between two languages. We neglect the grammar of each of the language to communicate with our fellow countrymen. However, I now realise that the proper usage of English when spoken is actually a developed understanding of grammar, not the accent. Hence, to teach English to speakers of other languages, it is important that I use grammar a guiding tool when writing and speaking to those who are learning the language. This will hopefully put them in good stead when communicating in English to anyone.
