It is amazing to realize how many subtleties there are in the English language. In this unit we learn 4 different ways of speaking in the present tense, when we normally use these tenses, and some ideas how to practice them in the classroom. The first present tense is Present Simple. For example: I take an online tefl course. You don't look so great today. I eat breakfast every day. The present simple is actually kind of general and speaks to something that happens. The present continuous is more specific and tends to be an action that is happening now in an ongoing way. I am renting a condo near the light rail. My dad is always complaining about politics. People also use it while telling a story of the past but speaking as if in the present of the story. "The dog was chasing me". The present perfect links past action to the present by stating something that was done at some unspecific time in the past. It is done and may or may not be happening now. An example of this would be asking someone about their bucket list. Have you ever climbed a mountain? I have eaten chocolate covered ants. The present perfect continuous takes the idea from present perfect but it is still going on and may continue in the future. I have been freaking out about this exam all semester. You haven't been sleeping with my husband, have you?
