There are many schools of thought on lesson planning, and while some believe it can be a detriment to learners of a new language, lesson planning is generally a necessity for inexperienced teachers. While it is important to retain flexibility to allow for situations in which students have more trouble with a language point than anticipated or the class is having a lot of fun engaging in an activity, having lesson plans allows teachers to have an organized and logical approach to a lesson, ensure that all materials necessary are present, set goals for themselves as well as for the learners, and keep records of what the class has done, as well as many other important benefits. When planning lessons, it is important to try and be as realistic about potential problems the learners will face as well as how much time each stage of the lesson will require.
