TEFL teaching techniques put into practice certain methodologies of teaching English. The varied approaches to teaching a second language have developed over time from the classical method of direct translation from one language to another to more recent methods that encourage more speaking, interaction, movement, and real-life context. ESA (Engage, Study, Activate) is a newer method that seeks to incorporate the best aspects of several other methods. First, the teacher warms up the students interactively, then focuses on teaching content, and then wraps up the lesson with another activity meant to reinforce the learned content. Each portion of the ESA method may be cycled through more than once during a class session as long as the session begins with engagement and ends with activation. The teacher must keep the class session level-appropriate, varied, and fresh to maximize the attention, motivation, and retention of the students.
