This unit provided an overview of how students are evaluated or tested. Initially, students must be evaluated to determine their current level of proficiency in English, which is accomplished by placement or diagnostic testing in all four areas of language comprehension: listening, reading, speaking and writing. Once the level of proficiency is determined and the student is placed in a class appropriate to their level of understanding and fluency, the progress of students is periodically tested to measure achievement and retention. Progress testing also allows the teacher to assess whether or not some language points and skills previously covered need to be reviewed and strengthened further. Lastly, practice tests are given to students to help them prepare for external exams that are used by universities and businesses to assess an applicants preparedness for admission or employment, respectively (among other purposes). This unit was helpful as a 'snapshot' or general summary of the types of evaluations a teacher will be required to make of (and share with) their students.
