In this unit I learnt about the different challenges that can be found in the EFL classroom and some strategies to deal with the problems when they arise. For example, if students are working at different speeds to have extra activities such as word searches available for the fast finishers. Furthermore, as student participation in larger classes can be difficult, pair work, choral drilling, worksheets and group leaders can facilitate learning. Furthermore, it discussed the use of the native language in the classroom and how to encourage learners to feel confident and comfortable in their use of English by using clear and simple instructions, visual prompts and as a teacher refraining from communicating in the native language. Forcing reluctant students to participate will not encourage participation in the long term. However, giving time to practice and role play in smaller groups can help language learners grow in confidence.
