Teachers need materials in order to effectively teach English, and this often means, among other things, a coursebook. While there are many opinions on course books and they have their fair share of both advantages and disadvantages, a teacher will often times have no control over whether or not they are compelled to use a coursebook or over which coursebook they use. As such, a teacher needs to be creative and capable of finding and/or creating supplemental materials and activities in order to make up for the shortcomings that coursebooks present. Many coursebooks, for example, are out of date and made for international use rather than specifically for native speakers of a certain language; a teacher needs to be able to utilize other materials to educate students in a more topical and current manner, to reinforce concepts that the learners might have a harder time with than the coursebook was designed to anticipate, and to help learners overcome unique issues arising from their native cultures and languages.
