Here Below you can check out the feedback (for one of our units) of one of the 16.000 students that last year took an online course with ITTT!

This unit covered a few of the problems teachers face in teaching ESL. First, initial lessons should not focus on learning a language point, but on establishing rapport between students (if a class of new students) and between the students and the teacher. Second, lessons should always begin with a 'warmer' or engage phase; a short game or activity that gets the class using English and is ideally related to the language point to be studied. Third, the situation of having students of differing language level can develop over time, even if they have been placed well at the beginning of their English study; some students will learn more quickly and others more slowly than the average. Fourth is the problem of large classes. Controlling such a class and keeping everyone involved will be a challenge. The use of group / pair work and individual worksheets can help ensure everyone is benefiting. Fifth is the problem of keeping students from using their L1 and to use English instead, a particular problem in monolingual classes. Sixth is the problem of students who are reluctant to participate, perhaps because they are intimidated / lack confidence or even for cultural reasons. Using pair work or role play (where they are 'somebody else", not themselves) can help. Lastly, it is essential that listening skills be developed, but listening to audio extracts can be difficult for many. The teacher should ensure the quality of cassettes / CDs and be sure the volume is at a level all can hear. This unit is helpful to me as a "heads up" for the problems that can / will be encountered in a classroom.
