In this initial lesson, we discussed the qualities of a good teacher as well as the qualities of a good learner. This displayed a detailed description of what we should aim to be as teachers, but it also allowed us to understand how to identify our students in order to personalize our individual teaching approach. Furthermore, it is interesting to see the different roles a teacher can take in a classroom. This clearly depends on the audience, which was also discussed in this lesson. There are obvious differences between adult and young learners that need to be taken into consideration prior to planning a lesson, as this will be an important factor regarding which role the teacher should take. Lastly, not only is there a division between adult learners and young learners, but there are two other divisions discussed in this lesson that we should keep in mind: language level; and motivation. It is important to bear in mind that, regardless of a student's age, there will be a difference in the level they communicate in. Even within a same level classroom, there will be students that are above or under average. It is highly important that the teacher identifies the level of each student when correcting, and interacting, as this can lead to causing loss of motivation or frustration amongst the students. It is also worth noting that, regardless of age or English level, students will have different sorts of motivation. Whether it be for traveling/future career purposes or simply their passion, not all students will be as motivated as others to invest time into learning. It is again the teacher's responsibility to identify the interest each student has, and motivate where necessary. This lesson provided me with a good insight into the differences that can be found in a classroom, and how important it is to prepare for your audience in advance.
