This unit was all about past tenses. The unit covered past simple, past continuous, past perfect, and past perfect continuous. Past simple verbs are using formed by adding -ed or -d to the base form of the verb. There are many irregular past tense verbs as well. Past simple verbs are used to describe completed actions in the past. Past continuous verbs are formed by using was/were plus the verb plus the -ing ending. This tense is used when describing interrupted past actions, showing gradual development that took place in the past, and for actions that began before a time and probably continued after it. Past perfect verbs are formed by using had plus the past participle. For example, "My friend had worked at many universities before retiring." This tense is used to represent actions that occurred before other actions in the past. Finally the past perfect continuous tense is formed by using had plus been plus the verb plus -ing. This form is not used as frequently, but it is used to talk about longer actions or situations in the past that had been going on continuously up to the past moment that we are thinking about. For example, "Before leaving to go to the movies, she had been talking with her mom for a few hours." These are the four past tenses reviewed in this unit.
