Unit 5 was all about managing classes. As a classroom teacher, this unit was largely a review for me of things that I have already learned through Teach For America, my Master's program, and my classroom teaching experience. I felt that many of the topics covered such as giving clear and precise instructions, encouraging students/being positive, ideal ways to set up classrooms, etcetera were all very valuable classroom management tools. I have implemented many of these strategies in my classroom and have seen positive results. I particularly like using gestures combined with music to cut down on teacher talk time. I like really reviewing routines at the beginning of the year to save time as the year goes on. Good classroom management is key in the success of any classroom. I for one know, as when I first started out as a teacher my classroom management needed a great deal of work. Luckily I had a great deal of coaching and practice and am now asked to help coach other teachers to improve their classroom management skills.
