Another group of learners is the business group of people who learn English for specific purposes. For instance, teaching hotel staff the type of English that will help them professionally. The teacher’s role here is to teach the type of English language that they can adapt to their business environment, such as receiving and making telephone calls, presentations, introductions, etc. Teaching here can be done with an in-company group, an in-school group or on a one on one basis. What is important to note when teaching these group of students is prioritizing their needs. Teachers should be able to strike a balance between their wants and needs. Teachers will therefore need a general understanding of the client’s job which will help teachers understand the areas of English that they lack in. Teachers should take note of the “Needs Analysis” and “Needs Negotiation” that will enable the teacher to plan an effective course outline that suits their needs. The “Needs Analysis” can be done in the form of a written questionnaire or can involve a simple information chat with clients or training manager. A “Needs analysis” questionnaire includes the client’s details, past learning experience, and will ask clients to identify specific objectives of the course and get them to prioritize. On the other hand, “Needs Negotiation” should be done in day one of the lesson plan. This can be done by getting each participant to state precisely what they use English for in their jobs, what they will need it for in the future, a discussion of findings and agreement on common needs, feedback session where everyone shares this information publicly, etc. After a “Needs Analysis” and “Needs Negotiation” has been done, teachers need to start planning the program of the course. Teachers should begin with suitable learning objectives, situations, language and published material. There are a bunch of material in the market that a teacher can use for teaching business English. Authentic material is invaluable when teaching business groups. Example: faxes, letters, company reports, and publicity material, Things to consider when teaching business groups is to make sure that you find out as much as you can about the company, remember that your are not a business expert, but an expert in English. On the first day, take everything you need even though you might think its too much, dress smart as you are likely to be judged by your outward appearance, etc. during the course keep record of used material, attendance and punctuation, cancelled lessons, never gossip, etc. After the course you may be required to write a post-course report from your employer. This usually includes details of course content, student evaluation, test/attendance percentage, plus suggestions for further study. Another class or group of that teachers may come across or find themselves teaching are the monolingual or multilingual class. the multilingual class are made up of students from different nationalities. This type of class is mostly found in countries where English is the native language. An advantage of students found in multilingual classes is the fact that they all have one thing in common, they all speak English and can therefore communicate with each other. Students from different cultural backgrounds also add variety and ideas to the classroom. On the other hand, monolingual classes usually take place in the students’ native country. It is also likely that they will all have the same kind of difficulties with English. Also, they have the same cultural background which can make it easier to identify certain topics that would be of interest to the group. Tips to consider when teaching this particular group is make the exercises more task-oriented, keep speaking activities short until students have more confidence and fluency. Describe your reasoning clearly and get their support from the beginning, etc.
