Unit 1 was all about teachers and learners. The unit first covered qualities that describe a good teacher. Many of the qualities that define a good teacher have to do with how the teacher interacts with his or her students. Overall, teachers should love their jobs, have good subject knowledge, be kind, motivating, and able to relate to students in a way that encourages them and helps them to best learn the material being covered. The unit then went on to describe the roles of teachers. Teachers must be able to adapt and seamlessly transition from one role to the next, depending on the given situation. The roles that the teacher fills include, but are not limited to, manager, organizer, assessor, prompter, participant, tutor, facilitator, model, and monitor. Following the roles of the teacher, Unit 1 explained what makes a good learner. Overall, a good learner is someone who is willing and eager to learn. This person is not afraid to ask questions, responds well to correction, pays close attention to what is being taught, and puts what is learned into practice. Students can be young learners, older children, or even adults. Adults may have had a variety of former experiences learning the English language, whereas young children most likely will have had less of these opportunities. However, adult learners usually are the ones who have personally chosen to study English. Young learners are not usually the ones taking the initiative to enroll in English classes. The language ability of each student ranges from beginners to advanced. Beginners usually have very limited English ability, while advanced students are just working to perfect their English. People have a variety of motivations for studying a new language. They may have the desire to travel to or live in another country or they may simply have an interest in learning other languages. It is important for teachers to help students identify their motivation for learning English, as a motivated student is usually a more successful student.
