Past Tense like present tense is broken down into Past simple, Past continuous, Past perfect, and Past perfect continuous. Past simple is typically structured with subject plus the base verb with “ed” or “d”. There are also irregular verbs like buy which used bought as its past form. Past tense is used when there is definite time. The Past continuous like the present continuous is used with the subject was/were compared to is/are for present tense plus the verb and “ing”, for example I was working yesterday. Past continuous is typically used for continuous event or indefinite time. Past perfect is used to describe something that happened in the past, for example using past to describe the past, for example “by the time the game was over Tom had scored three goals”. The Past perfect continuous describes something that happened in the past but continues up to the time being considered for example I had been sleeping for the duration of the game. Story telling in various forms are good ways of teaching the past tense at the activate stage.
