Unit 1 is an introduction to TESOL/TEFL consisting of a general overview of the course, the roles and attributes exhibited by teachers and students as well as the relationship and rapport between student and teacher. In my opinion, the most important qualities of a "good teacher" include fairness, subject knowledge, and ability to motivate students. Fairness, ability to motivate, and subject knowledge are antecedents to additional desirable qualities that are present in good teachers, such as the ability to involve/engage all students and to give encouraging feedback. A good teacher, put simply, is concerned with the learning of his or her students more so than with the act of teaching itself (which is extremely important as well). Moreover, a “good student” possesses certain observable qualities: disposition to listen, experiment, and accept correction as a learning opportunity. Willingness to ask questions and introspective analysis of their own learning processes appear to be a additional traits of successful students. Teachers must deliberate the most appropriate level of complexity, pace, and type of activities that will be conducted in the class by considering learning experience, motivation, language awareness, behaviors, life experience, culture and first language, and language level. Thus, teachers must play different roles in the classroom, depending on the age and skill of the students, for instance. These roles can be categorized as manager, organizer, assessor, prompter, participant, tutor, facilitator, model, and observer/monitor. The key to knowing which role a teacher should assume and when to do so is having a balance between lessons that are centered on the teacher and lessons that are centered on the students.
