This unit explains pronunciation and phonology. At first it covers intonation explaining how we rise and fall throughout sentences to enhance or change meaning to sentences. For example our intonation usually falls when we are finishing a sentence and are indicating that we are going to stop talking. When we want the other person to respond or confirm we usually have rising intonation at the end of phrases. This unit then moves onto stress and explains how stressing different words in the same sentence can completely change the sentences meaning . It also gives a guide on which syllables to stress depending on the type of word and how many syllables it has. Finally the unit introduces the phonemic alphabet which covers all the sounds the can be made in the English language. The unit breaks down different articulation and the manner of articulation whilst using a diagram of the speech organs. This explanation shows the techniques required to make each sound using the diagram and the different forms of articulation.
