This unit covers modal auxiliary verbs, phrasal verbs, passive voice and relative clauses. Modal auxiliary verbs are used to add meaning to other base form verbs expressing obligation, permission, possibility, ability and advice. Modal auxiliary verbs may also express different forms of formality. Passive voice is used when it is not known, not important, or we don't want to say, who is performing an action. In passive voice the object of an active verb becomes the subject of the passive verb. Only transitive verbs, which are verbs followed by an object may be used in passive voice. Phrasal verbs consist of a verb plus one or two particles. There are three types of phrasal verbs, Intransitive, Transitive Separable and Transitive Inseparable. Intransitive phrasal verbs cannot be followed by a direct object whilst Transitive Separable phrasal verbs can be followed by an object as long as the object pronoun is placed between the verb and the particle. Transitive Inseparable phrasal verbs can have the object pronoun after the particle. Finally this unit covers relative clauses. Relative clauses modify nouns by describing, identifying or giving further information about that noun. Relative clauses are introduced by using a relative pronoun such as which, who and that. There are two types of relative clauses, defining and non-defining where the information in the defining relative clause is essential to the meaning of the sentence.
