Reading and Listening skills are very important receptive skills for students to develop. It is important that the challenges posed is developing these skills are addressed so students will increase efficiency in developing these skills. Basic attention should be paid to the sentence length, word length and number of unfamiliar words used in prepared material. Pre-teaching may then be done to “iron out” these issues before teaching the lesson.
Apart from using the eyes and ears for reading and listening the mind is also engaged in other skilled areas such as predictive or context oriented reading, specific information scanning, skimming story or article and also detailed reading for complete awareness.
It is very important that lesson design involves using material that interest most of the students over the course of lessons as this will facilitate greater learning, thereby increasing efficiency in lesson delivery.
