The Tense system seems to be among the most difficult aspects of the English language both as learner as well as teacher. It is therefore important to grasp firmly the fundamentals covering the basic forms used for affirmative, negative, and questions. The Present tense is further broken down into: Present Simple, Present continuous, Present Perfect, and Present Perfect continuous. The Present simple takes the form of the subject plus the verb with the negative appearing before the verb for example the negative “not”. The question form will include an auxiliary verb such as do at the beginning. The Present continuous is easily identified with the verb using the present participle ending in “ing” such as riding or sailing. The Present perfect uses the auxiliary verb “have’ plus past participle after the verb such as “en” in verb written. The Present Perfect continuous relates the past activity with the present implying that the activity will continue in the future. The common for is Subject plus auxiliary verb have plus been plus verb ending in “ing”. It is important for the teacher to understand and recognize the common tense errors students make, the reasons for the errors, which is usually due to errors from no following the above forms, and then to correct the errors appropriately.
