Unit 14 is about course books and lesson materials.
Some of the teachers like course books, some of them don’t. Sometimes schools have the wide range of different kinds of course books, sometimes teachers have to create their own materials.
Lesson materials can be divided into two groups: authentic and created materials.
Authentic materials (magazines, newspapers, brochures, films, etc.) are usually used with a higher levelled students. Such material is real and interesting. When students understand this material, their confidence level increases.
Created materials (puzzles, crosswords, flashcards, role-play cards, etc.) are designed by the teacher. The reason to use create material is to replace or supplement the course book material.
Talking about course book it is noted that they are usually consists of student’s books, workbooks, teacher’s books, CDs, videos. Course books have advantages (it provides a syllabus, balance of skills, offers progression, it is good for inexperienced teachers, etc.) and disadvantages (does not always fit the specific needs, dictates what to teach, can be outdated, etc.).
When teachers use the book they can omit, replace, supplement or adapt the given material to the purposes of the lesson
